The morning after Lukas and I had our little shouting match in front of the Manor, I reported to work at the usual time. Around an hour after my arrival, I heard the pub’s front door swing open.

Customers had been such a rare occurrence during the last few days that I bothered to look up, curious who had chanced the wrath of the skinheads for a cup of joe. It was no small surprise to see Grim’s scowling mug enter the tavern.

“Hello, my friend,” I greeted, rising from my corner table. I had been arranging the security schedules for Pete’s other establishments and was past due for a distraction.

Grim nodded in response, bypassing George and the pot of hot coffee brewing behind the bar. Instantly, I realized that something was wrong.

“What brings you to the bustling metropolis of Meraton?” I inquired, as Grim pulled back one of the scarred wooden chairs at my table.

“Business,” he grunted. “Bad business.”

“What’s wrong?”

“Three days ago, I delivered a load of peppers to a man who runs a booth at the local market. I came down this morning to collect my earnings. You know what he gave me for my time and effort? “Ace and his boys haven’t shown up to exercise their vendetta,” I grunted. “Our Aryan buddies seem content to stay at the Manor and harass the locals whenever the opportunity presents itself. We are in a stalemate, each waiting for the opponent’s next move.”

“Something’s gotta give,” Grim replied. “If my little farm was hurt this bad by those dickwads, what’s the impact going to be to Pete, or some of the other folks who make their living off the market?”

“This pub’s a small part of Pete’s empire,” I nodded, “but you are singing off the same page of the hymnal, my friend. Tempers have to be simmering. So far, Watts and the police have kept the peace, but that’s not going to last forever.”

“Why don’t I drive back to Alpha, corral Butter, and grab my gear? Let’s run those bums out of Meraton, and for good measure, West Texas,” the old warrior offered.

Even without Kevin, I was confident that my old team could exterminate the cockroaches now residing at the Manor. We would make a three-vectored approach in
